Commit to the Challenge: 5 evenings with Shelly, learning asana sequencing, meditation and pranayama methods that you can continue safely and easily in your own home. SYF2014 Sedona, AZ, United StatesThis Pelvic Floor workshop is designed to educate and empower you to take an active approach in creating your own pelvic health. Whether you suffer from a pelvic pain disorder, mild or severe urinary stress or urge incontinence, are interested in preventing incontinence as you age or simply want to know more about your pelvic floor for yourself or to share the knowledge with others, this workshop is for you. Topics included: 1) Define and discuss stress vs. urge incontinence, including a brief review of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM’s) and the pelvic diaphragm. 2) Discuss the main factors that influence incontinence: postural alignment, core stability, hip strength, hip flexibility, pelvic floor muscle activation and relaxation. 3) Discuss the role of the nervous system as it relates to incontinence. 4) Discuss how the popular “Kegel” exercises can potentially exacerbate many incontinence issues! 5) Participate in a fun and inspiring yoga practise as described below: A) Demonstrate breathing methods (pranayama) and meditation techniques as they relate to incontinence, particularly focusing on the importance of releasing PFM’s. B) Discuss and demonstrate the correct method of pelvic floor muscle (PFM) control (activation and deactivation), incorporating physical therapy PFM strengthening exercises, pilates, and yoga asanas that address this method. C) Discuss and demonstrate lumbo-pelvic strengthening (core stability) with use of Physical Therapy exercises, Pilates, yoga asanas, and pranayama. D) Discuss and demonstrate hip strengthening & hip opening (flexibility) with use of traditional Physical Therapy exercises, Pilates, yoga asanas, and pranayama.
