Discussions will include how the popular “Kegel” exercises can potentially exacerbate many incontinence and pelvic pain issues, how the nervous system is involved in incontinence and pelvic pain, and how pelvic health is so much more than just the pelvic floor! The differentiation among yoga, yoga therapy and medical therapeutic yoga emphasizing benefits, precautions and potential contraindications as it relates to pelvic dysfunctions will be discussed and explored. MONTREAL:Find Breath.Find Balance: Rediscovering Postural Movement Through Breath
The Westin Hotel 270, St-Antoine O., Montreal, Quebec, CanadaJoin Shelly as she presents at the Montreal International Symposium on Therapeutic Yoga: "MISTY"! A symposium that is dedicated to offering quality education and evidence based yoga. Presenters chosen are highly qualified professionals in their field, Medical & Yoga Experts sharing vast experience and knowledge. Shelly was invited to present 2 of her workshops: Demystifying Pelvic Health and Find Breath. Find Balance: Rediscovering Postural Movement Through Breath: Join Shelly as she passionately shares this educational, inspiring and interactive workshop discussing the mechanics and physiology of breathing and how it influences numerous systems of our body, with a focus on how breathing affects postural alignment and movement. Breathing patterns can influence all 5 Koshas (physical, mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual) of our existence; conversely, the state of our Koshas can influence our breathing patterns. We will also discuss and explore some of the most common and inefficient breathing patterns in our culture (and in the yoga studio!) and how they can lead to states of imbalance. A fun and inspiring practical yoga component consisting of asanas, pranayama and meditation will be included. Come with an open mind and heart to explore the combination of the science of respiration with the art of yoga. TEDx Red Deer: “Pushing Boundaries” in HealthCare
TEDx Red Deer Red Deer, AB, CanadaTEDx Red Deer: "Pushing Boundaries" in HealthCare: As a Physical Therapist over the past 16 years, I am aware of some of the limitations of our current healthcare system. As a result, I've incorporated my skills, training and experience as a Yoga Therapist into my physical therapy practise to offer a more holistic approach to the treatment experience. After sustaining a traumatic injury myself, I had the opportunity to directly experience the missing link in our healthcare system. In my TEDx talk, I will be sharing some of the ways in which yoga can be used to promote healing immediately and safely after an injury that would not have otherwise warranted therapy. I will then guide the audience through a short meditation practise, similar to what I might use with my patients and in my own rehabilitation.
