Acute Orthopedic Injuries: Yoga Therapy, the Missing Link in Rehabilitation:
As a physical therapist and yoga therapist for over 16 years, I am aware of the benefits and use of yoga therapy and physiotherapy, and the limitations of our current healthcare system; particularly as they relate to orthopedic rehabilitation.
However, after sustaining a traumatic orthopedic injury myself, I had the opportunity to be a patient and experience first hand what it was like to ‘go through our healthcare system’.
I am pleased and honoured to announce that I have been invited to share my story at the 2014 Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research (SYTAR) in Austin, Texas.
I will be sharing specific examples of how I was able to use yoga inĀ my own rehabilitation immediately after the injury, even thought I was told that rehabilitation would not start for 2 months. In orthopedic rehab we focus on the physical layer (kosha). I will be sharing how and why the 4 other koshas are equally important in the acute stages of an ortho injury. The biopsychosocial approach to all divisions of therapy is essential if we want to treat the ‘person’ and not the diagnosis.
