Yoga therapy offers a framework that is person-centered\, empowering\, compassionate\, evidence-informed and includes addressing the whole person. Yoga techniques offer accessible\, safe and cost-effective practices that can be integrated into any rehabilitation program in the clinic or used independently at home. SUMMARY:Enhancing Pelvic Floor Health Through Yoga + Education - Winfield\, AB
DESCRIPTION:Your pelvic floor plays an important role not only in bladder\, bowel\, reproduction and sexual function\, but also in spinal health\, hip function\, breathing\, voice production\, core strategies\, standing balance and more. The pelvic floor is also known to be intimately connected to the feet and the floor of the mouth. \nPelvic health issues related to these many roles are commonly poorly addressed or often left untreated in both women and men. \nJoin Shelly Prosko\, PT\, CPI\, C-IAYT\, Physiotherapist and Yoga Therapist\, for this 1-day pelvic floor health yoga workshop that offers a combination of inspiring\, empowering\, educational and valuable theory and practice. \nWe will explore evidence surrounding the biopsychosocial factors that influence pelvic floor function and combine it with yoga practices and philosophy that can be safely and effectively used immediately to enhance pelvic floor health. \nObjectives for workshop (subject to minor changes):\n \nTheory: (approx 2.5 hours):\n \n\nbriefly overview the anatomy and biomechanics of the pelvic diaphragm\nlearn the roles the pelvic diaphragm plays in overall health and wellness\nlearn the biopsychosocial factors that can contribute to performance and function of the pelvic floor\nreview the first 2 chakras (using a framework based on one modern translation of chakras) and discuss the role they may play in pelvic health\noutline the 4 categories of pelvic floor health dysfunctions\ndiscuss the debate surrounding the performance of kegel exercises for pelvic floor health and rehabilitation using a best evidence approach\ndiscuss Mula Bandha (MB)  including the potential intention of MB from a historical perspective\, and explore the potential differences and similarities to pelvic floor engagement\noutline factors that may contribute to a Non-Relaxing Pelvic Floor and health issues that may arise from over-recruitment of pelvic floor musculature\nbriefly outline the 8 limbed path of Pantanjali’s yoga\, and how each limb may contribute to a biopsychosocial-spiritual approach to pelvic floor health and rehabilitation\nUnderstand scope of practice when addressing pelvic floor health for those practitioners who do not perform internal pelvic floor exams or treatment and when to refer to a physical therapist who specializes in pelvic floor health.\n\nPractical Session: (approx 4 hours\, includes space + time to relax\, explore\, go-at-your-own-pace\, learn\, and have fun):\n \n\nlearn and experience breathing methods and meditation techniques as they relate to pelvic floor health\, with a focus on awareness and relaxation of pelvic floor muscles\ndiscover and practice awareness of pelvic diaphragmatic excursion by integrating mindfulness practices and yoga practices including breathing\, visualization\, meditation\, postures and mindful movement.\nlearn and participate in activities that include components of the core strategy system that have been shown to influence pelvic floor muscle engagement and function\, including hip and lumbo-pelvic strategies\, through the use of a functional integrative approach which includes mindful movement\, yoga postures and breathing practices.\nlearn and experience how the voice\, respiratory and pelvic diaphragms work together through breath\, movement and vocalization (as time permits)\nparticipate in activities to enhance foot awareness and potential connection to the pelvic floor\n\n\n\n\n\n**This workshop is not intended to assess or treat or act as medical advice for your individual health concerns. DESCRIPTION:I’m honoured to be presenting at the 2019 Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research (SYTAR) in Newport Beach\, CA on: \n  \nYoga Therapy and Pelvic Health: Featuring Incontinence\, the Silent and Isolating Companion \nOur pelvic floor (PF) plays key roles in bladder\, bowel\, reproduction\, sexual function\, breathing\, hip function\, balance and more. Unfortunately\, PF issues are often poorly addressed or ignored. Incontinence is common in men and women of varying ages and in young athletes; yet many stay silent about this isolating issue. We have evidence to suggest yoga may help people with incontinence and other PF issues. \nThis evidence informed session includes a lecture component outlining biopsychosocial factors that influence PF function and an empowering experiential component including yoga practices and philosophy to enhance PF health that stays within yoga therapy scope of practice and with a focus on helping people living with incontinence. \n**Note: this session is not intended as treatment for your individual health concerns. DESCRIPTION:The 2019 San Diego Pain Summit (SDPS) continues to provide relevant clinical education and current pain research delivered by expert clinicians and research scientists surrounding the topic of pain.\nThe keynote for the 2019 SDPS is Dr. Antonio Damasio. \nShelly Prosko\, PT\, C-IAYT\, PYT\, CPI will be one of the speakers\, presenting on: \n\nA Case for Compassion in Pain Care: using an integrative yoga approach to enhance compassionate care to better serve the person in pain and the healthcare professional \nNumerous national health surveys and reports conclude that compassion is lacking in healthcare and many would even argue there is a growing compassion deficit in some parts of the world. As healthcare providers\, it is assumed we will provide compassionate care to those we serve\, as it is inherently part of our job. However\, research shows that the capacity to provide compassionate care can vary and depend on a wide variety of factors. There may be challenges we face that may influence and even inhibit our ability to offer compassion to people in pain. \nIn this session\, I will provide a working definition of compassion\, differentiate between empathy and compassion\, discuss the debate surrounding the ‘myth of compassion fatigue’\, summarize the research surrounding the benefits of providing and receiving compassion (including self-compassion) for those living with persistent pain and also for the healthcare providers\, and describe accessible and practical ways that yoga can be used to train and cultivate more compassionate (and self-compassionate) responses. Be prepared to learn and experience how our pelvic\, respiratory\, and vocal diaphragms all work together as a coordinated team to contribute to overall health and wellness using a yogic biopsychosocial model.
