SUMMARY:Insight into Compassion: The Foundation of Pain Care
DESCRIPTION:Join Shelly for this brief LIVE ONLINE presentation at The International Mental Health Festival. \nCompassion in pain care is more than just extending kindness towards people in pain. It involves gaining a more in-depth understanding and insight into the needs of the person we are serving and ourselves\, then choosing responses that serve both\, within the context of the situation. \nAs healthcare providers\, it is assumed we will provide compassionate care to those we serve\, as it is inherently part of our job. However\, research shows that the capacity for compassion can vary and depend on a wide variety of factors. There may be challenges we face that may influence or inhibit our ability to offer and receive compassion. \nJoin Shelly Prosko for this session as she outlines these challenges and the benefits of cultivating compassion and self-compassion in pain care for both the person living with pain and the health provider. \nFor more details about this free online conference and to register for this session\, CLICK HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 3: The Current State(s) and Theories on Pain Management \nThe work of yoga is to discriminate between the changeable and unchangeable in Life. \nIn this webinar Dr. Matthew J Taylor shares insights into the importance of discerning between those concepts in pain care. He’ll weave together how pain theories continue to evolve (changeable)\, how your view of the world continues to and should change\, and how to use that awareness as you explore this webinar series. He will make it fun\, he’ll probably make fun of a few of our misperceived theories\, and he welcomes your discussion at the conclusion of the webinar. \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 3:\n\nHave fun reviewing some pain theories and the present state of uncertainty that has become more acutely evident this year.\nLeave with a framework to better appreciate and celebrate your present circumstances in working with yoga and pain care.\nBe able to articulate that your ongoing creative responses are normal and fallible\, and certain to change.\n\nTo register for just for Chapter 3 with Dr. Matthew Taylor\, Shelly\, Neil and Marlysa\, CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Pain Society of Alberta Virtual Conference: Yoga Therapy: A Contribution to Comprehensive Pain Care
DESCRIPTION:Yoga Therapy: A Contribution to Comprehensive Pain Care \nShelly Prosko\, PT\, C-IAYT \nDescription: \nPeople in pain are seeking yoga as a complement to their pain care. A growing number of medical professionals are recommending yoga to their patients and an increasing number of clinicians are integrating yoga into their professional practice. Clinicians and people in pain are in need of accessible and cost-effective treatment options that encompass an evidence-informed\, biopsychosocial\, patient-centered and empowering approach to chronic pain care. \nYoga therapy is a health practice that offers such an approach and is being more widely accepted and used as a viable therapeutic option perhaps partly due to the increase in evidence supporting the positive effects of yoga on patient outcomes\, function and quality of life in many populations with persistent pain and pain associated conditions. \nThis presentation will highlight yoga therapy and its value in comprehensive pain management including how it can serve to potentially fill some of the gaps we currently face in pain care. The presentation will point to the research supporting yoga in pain care and offer clinical pearls that can be immediately integrated into practice. \nAfter this presentation\, you will: \n\nGain an introductory understanding of yoga therapy and how it is differentiated from modern postural yoga.\nLearn how yoga therapy can contribute to evidence-informed comprehensive pain management and fill a variety of gaps.\nDiscover where to learn more and gain insight on how to refer your patients to an appropriate\, safe and chronic pain-informed yoga practice.\nLearn an accessible and practical technique and guidelines that can be immediately integrated into the clinic setting.\n\n  \nTo sign up for Shelly’s session and the entire Pain Society of Alberta Online Conference FOR FREE\, CLICK HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 12: Pain\, Addiction and Yoga \nPresenter: Tracey Sondik \nThis webinar explores addiction and its intersection with pain. This is particularly important in the climate of the opioid crisis and the increased public awareness on addiction and the movement towards identifying viable and effective nonpharmacological interventions for pain. \nWe will discuss the philosophical context and practices of yoga in connection to these topics. \nWe hope that a greater understanding of addiction will increase compassion towards the people living in pain\, and decrease one of the most powerful stigmas around pain. \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 12:\n\nDiscover how yoga philosophy provides a framework for both understanding the root causes for pain and addiction.\nExplore the growing body of research supporting yoga and other mindfulness- based interventions as important complementary mind/body adjunctive approaches for the treatment of addiction.\nExplore a new integrative paradigm for addiction recovery that combines traditional yoga philosophy and practices (asana\, pranayama\, meditation) and western psychological treatments.\nPractice specific asana\, pranayama\, and meditation practices that can be utilized as part of an integrative approach to addiction recovery.\n\nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 12 with Tracey Sondik (facilitated by Shelly Prosko\, Marlysa Sullivan and Neil Pearson) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Online course: Yoga Therapy in Pain Care
DESCRIPTION:An estimated 20-25% of North Americans and 1.5 billion people worldwide live with chronic pain and a growing number of health professionals are recommending yoga to their patients particularly since we now have research to support yoga is a potentially safe and effective approach for improving function\, pain and quality of life for people with chronic pain. \nYoga therapists are well positioned to contribute to a comprehensive pain care plan. However\, misunderstandings about pain by the therapist can result in suboptimal outcomes for the person in pain\, where the therapist might use language that unintentionally limits the potential for recovery and resilience or might avoid yoga practices that ultimately would improve tissue health\, reduce inflammation\, support self-efficacy\, help restore more ease of movement\, and help regain activities that the person enjoys and values in life. \n \nThis module includes a combination of lecture and experiential components\, including participation in awareness\, breathing\, meditation and movement practices. Resources will be shared that will be valuable for the therapist to use for themselves and to share with the people in pain they serve. \nThis module is being delivered live\, online and is part of Ajna Yoga Therapy Center’s Advanced Yoga Therapy program. This module will also be open to those yoga professionals or health professionals who are not part of the Yoga Therapy program\, but would like to take the module for their own learning and continuing education. \nIt is 19 hours total:  10 hours of live online instruction with Shelly with an additional 9 hours of pre-recorded videos for students to watch. \nSchedule for the live\, online sessions: \nFri Oct 2:  5-8pm PST \nSat Oct 3: 9-12:30pm PST \nSun Oct 4: 9-12:30pm PST \n  \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nFor more details on Ajna Yoga Therapy Center’s full schedule of modules for their Advanced Yoga Therapy program click HERE \n

SUMMARY:Practitioner Self-Care During Challenging Times
DESCRIPTION:unsplash Simon Migaj \nPractitioner Self-Care During Challenging Times \nWe have heard the saying ‘put your own oxygen mask on first before helping another’ and we know that self-care is an important part of health and well-being for all\, including for healthcare practitioners. During times of difficulty and uncertainty\, self-care may be even more essential to help us navigate a sustainable path forward. \nWhat does self-care look like for you? Do you have the skills and tools you need to cultivate it? \nSelf-care is a popular term these days and perhaps the meaning has been watered-down and misinterpreted. When self-care becomes another item on your list of things ‘to do’ or an added pressure or expectation in an unrelenting pursuit of better health\, it can become the antithesis of self-care and we might be missing the whole point of it. \nAs a physiotherapist\, yoga therapist and continuing education provider who teaches on the topic of integrating yoga principles and practices into healthcare and rehab\, I offer tips and practices for healthcare providers on how to cultivate practitioner self-care\, which I present as an ongoing dynamic process of skills that involves awareness\, attention\, self-reflection\, self-compassion\, insight\, discernment\, courage and action. Self-care and self-compassion are not selfish nor soft skills – they are life skills that help us have the inner resources available to care for and serve others in a sustainable way. \nCompassion and self-compassion are shown to be associated with positive health effects such as reduced symptoms of anxiety\, depression\, less ruminating thoughts\, less fear of failure\, and increased emotional resiliency\, stress management and adaptive coping strategies during challenging times. \nIn this online webinar I offer through Embodia Academy\, learn how we can cultivate self-care and compassion in our daily lives\, amidst uncertainty and adversity\, and help carve a healthy path forward that may be sustained beyond tumultuous times. \nPlease consider supporting the value of this offering by joining me and choosing from the sliding scale that best suits your needs at this moment. \nThis webinar will be recorded and will also be available for purchase after the event. \nPractitioner Self-Care During Challenging Times. \nDetails and to register HERE.

SUMMARY:Symposium on Yoga Therapy + Research (SYTAR) - Newport Beach\, CA
DESCRIPTION:I’m honoured to be presenting at the 2019 Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research (SYTAR) in Newport Beach\, CA on: \n  \nYoga Therapy and Pelvic Health: Featuring Incontinence\, the Silent and Isolating Companion \nOur pelvic floor (PF) plays key roles in bladder\, bowel\, reproduction\, sexual function\, breathing\, hip function\, balance and more. Unfortunately\, PF issues are often poorly addressed or ignored. Incontinence is common in men and women of varying ages and in young athletes; yet many stay silent about this isolating issue. We have evidence to suggest yoga may help people with incontinence and other PF issues. \nThis evidence informed session includes a lecture component outlining biopsychosocial factors that influence PF function and an empowering experiential component including yoga practices and philosophy to enhance PF health that stays within yoga therapy scope of practice and with a focus on helping people living with incontinence. \n**Note: this session is not intended as treatment for your individual health concerns. SUMMARY:Woman on Fire 2019 - Brighton\, UK
DESCRIPTION:I’m thrilled to announce I will be one of the presenters at the 2019 Woman on Fire: Redefining Working in Wellness with Women in Brighton\, UK! \nJenny Burrell and Michelle Lyons have spear-headed this incredible conference dedicated to delivering quality continuing education in an inspiring\, empowering and FUN way. Something that is well aligned with my own mission to do the same. \nI will be presenting 2 sessions: A lecture-type presentation on Cultivating Compassion in Therapy and a practical session on Enhancing Pelvic Floor Health Through Yoga. \nCultivating Compassion in Therapy is more than just feeling compassion for our patients and clients. It involves gaining a more in-depth understanding and insight into the needs of our clients and ourselves and choosing responses that serve both the client and us within the context of the situation. It also includes helping our clients and ourselves cultivate self-compassion. Some compassion science researchers suggest this compassion can be trained. Join me for this 1 hour presentation about the science surrounding compassion\, the debate around compassion fatigue\, empathy vs compassion\, benefits of providing compassionate care both for our clients and ourselves\, and ways we can train compassion without burnout. \nJoin me for 1.5 hour practical session on Enhancing Pelvic Floor Health Through Yoga. Be prepared to participate and enjoy inspiring\, empowering and educational gentle yoga practices implementing a variety of techniques that you can immediately use for yourself and with your clients\, including pelvic floor (PF) awareness practices\, visualization\, mindfulness meditation\, breathing practices and mindful movement to help promote PF relaxation\, engagement and excursion. Explore and experience how PF health is not just about kegels or mula bandha! Examples of how yoga philosophy can inform language used to potentially enhance PF cueing and create safe therapeutic environments will be included. \nIn addition to learning\, you get to enjoy the added benefit of some well deserved self-care as you participate in these practices\, and experience what it feels like to nourish all aspects of your being\, using a biopsychosocial model of health. \n  \n**This practical session is not intended to assess or treat or act as medical advice for your individual health concerns. Please ensure you feel safe to practice in a group class without individual assessment or attention. Please seek guidance and treatment from your health professional in your area for any unmanaged conditions.** \n  \nFor more information and details about this conference and all the fabulous presenters and to register\, please visit: \nhttps://www.burrelleducation.com/woman-on-fire-2019/ \n  \n  \n
