SUMMARY:Yoga Therapy in Pain Care - Live Online
DESCRIPTION:An estimated 20-25% of North Americans and 1.5 billion people worldwide live with chronic pain and a growing number of health professionals are recommending yoga to their patients particularly since we now have research to support yoga is a potentially safe and effective approach for improving function\, pain and quality of life for people with chronic pain. \nYoga therapists are well positioned to contribute to a comprehensive pain care plan. However\, misunderstandings about pain by the therapist can result in suboptimal outcomes for the person in pain\, where the therapist might use language that unintentionally limits the potential for recovery and resilience or might avoid yoga practices that ultimately would improve tissue health\, reduce inflammation\, support self-efficacy\, help restore more ease of movement\, and help regain activities that the person enjoys and values in life. \nJoin Shelly Prosko\, Physiotherapist\, Yoga Therapist\, educator and pioneer of PhysioYoga in this 3 day yoga therapy module that includes a combination of lecture and experiential components\, including participation in awareness\, breathing\, meditation and movement practices. \n Resources will be shared that will be valuable for the therapist to use for themselves and to share with the people in pain they serve. \nSchedule: \nFriday March 11\, 2022:  5 – 8 pm PST \nSaturday March 12\, 2022:  10 am – 2:30 pm PST \nSunday March 13\, 2022:  10am – 2:30 pm PST \n  \nTo register visit Ajna Yoga Therapy HERE

SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 15: Connection\, Meaningful Relationship and Purpose in Life – Social and Existential Concerns in Pain Care \nPresenter: Marlysa Sullivan \nSocial and spiritual aspects of pain care are often poorly understood in both their importance and application to client/patient care. Spiritual well-being includes themes of aligning with one’s core values\, meaning and purpose\, and connectedness extending from the personal\, to social relationships\, to something more abstract or transcendent. \nThe philosophy of eudaimonia provides a secular perspective on these themes of spiritual well-being. Eudaimonia looks at what it means to flourish\, to connect to one’s highest purpose and live a meaningful life. \nEudaimonic well-being has been used as a concept in research to discuss a steadfast contentment that comes from living in alignment with one’s values\, self-actualization\, authenticity\, and having a sense of purpose and meaning. Research supports the many benefits of spiritual and eudaimonic well-being for pain care. \nFoundational to yoga philosophy and practice are these themes of spiritual and eudaimonic well-being including that of connectedness to one’s essential nature\, to others\, aligning with one’s values\, and a concept of purpose that supports one’s flourishing in a way that supports those around them. \nThese concepts of connection\, meaning and purpose\, and values will be discussed through the perspectives of spiritual well-being\, eudaimonic well-being and yoga philosophy and practice. An evidence-informed discussion will also help to facilitate the application of these ideas in a patient/client centered manner for the benefit of a biopsychosocial spiritual well-being for pain care \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 15:\n\nExamine the definition and importance of the spiritual domain of health for pain care from an evidence-informed perspective\nReflect on the concept of eudaimonic well-being as a secular perspective to spiritual well-being and its importance to pain care from an evidence-informed perspective\nExamine yoga philosophies and practices that align with spiritual and eudaimonic well-being\nApply the themes of spiritual and eudaimonic well-being to specific yoga practices for pain care from a patient/client centered perspective\n\nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 15 with Marlysa Sullivan (facilitated by Shelly Prosko and Neil Pearson) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 14: Compassion in Pain Care \nPresenter: Shelly Prosko \nCompassionate pain care is more than just extending kindness towards people in pain. It involves the dynamic process of gaining a more in-depth understanding of the needs of the person in pain and ourselves; then choosing the best responses\, within the context of the situation. Compassionate care also means having the skills to facilitate self-compassion in our patients and in ourselves. \nWithout compassion for the person in pain\, we cannot form an effective therapeutic relationship. And without practising self-compassion\, it is difficult to continue helping people with this complex phenomenon of pain. As healthcare providers\, it is assumed we will provide ongoing compassionate care. However\, research shows the capacity for providing and receiving compassion can vary and depend on many factors. \nFortunately\, growing research also suggests compassion can be trained and can improve pain care and protect against practitioner burnout and empathic distress. \nJoin Shelly for this webinar that will provide a guiding path to enhance compassion that can then improve pain care and the health and wellbeing of ourselves and those we serve. \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 14:\n\nDescribe components of compassion and self-compassion and their value in pain care for both the person in pain and the healthcare professional.\nOutline challenges and barriers we face that influence or inhibit our ability to offer and receive compassion.\nUnderstand contemporary views surrounding compassion fatigue and empathic distress.\nLearn practical tips and experience practices that prime for compassion and cultivate self-compassion that can be shared with patients and also immediately be integrated into your own daily home and workplace routine.\n\nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 14 with Shelly Prosko (facilitated by Marlysa Sullivan and Neil Pearson) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 13: Pain\, A Loss to be Grieved \nPresenter: Antonio Sausys \nGrief counselling may be the most neglected aspect of pain care within modern pain management programs. We lose so much when pain persists. Given the power of grief\, and that anything able to drive the hypervigilance of the individual and the nervous systems can maintain pain\, understanding grief and pain is vital. \nIn this webinar\, Antonio will discuss loss\, grief and pain\, their relationships and similarities and how they affect one another. Specific ideas and practices of yoga to work with loss\, grief and pain through this lens will be offered. \nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nGiven that pain has a strong subjective component\, by learning new ways to connect with it\, and practicing new ways of addressing it\, an individual can become much more suited to manage it. Empowering individuals to take matters in their own hands increases self-efficacy and is effective in turning around the often confrontational and hostile inner dialogue with pain. Thus an individual can tap into the ‘call to reconnect’ meta message that pain entails. It is often recognized that while pain is unavoidable\, suffering – resulting from the mental and emotional responses to pain – is. Reducing suffering is key to both pain management and grief work and\, at the same time\, one of the core goals of Yoga.” \nIn Yoga and Science in Pain Care  – Chapter 13\, Sausys expresses that “pain disrupts the balanced state of health and\, at the same time\, signals the need to return to it. It can be associated to tissue damage\, resulting in physical pain\, or derived from the damage caused to the connective psychic matrix that ensures the integrity of the self\, resulting in psychological pain. In any case\, the balance of physical or psychological health we are attached to for normal functioning is ruptured or lost. Then pain\, as a primary loss\, elicits the appearance of several secondary losses such as loss of functionality\, income\, status\, quality of life\, self-image\, body and psychological identity amongst others. Pain and grief are intimately related basic human experiences that enter into a particular feedback loop that perpetuates each other’s appearance. For that reason\, it is important to understand how these two processes are related and the implications of their interconnection.” \nIn this Webinar\, Antonio will:\n\nIdentify pain as a loss to be grieved\nExplain the interconnectedness of both processes\nExplore possible meta communications of pain\nExpose how individual’s self-involvement through practice can enhance efficacy in pain management\nGuide three techniques to: balance emotional reactivity to pain\, cognitively reframe the experience of pain and deidentify oneself from painful experiences\nAnswer to emerging comments and questions\n\n  \nTo register for just for Chapter 13 with Antonio Sausys (facilitated by Shelly Prosko\, Marlysa Sullivan and Neil Pearson) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 12: Pain\, Addiction and Yoga \nPresenter: Tracey Meyers\, Psy.D \nThis webinar explores addiction and its intersection with pain. This is particularly important in the climate of the opioid crisis and the increased public awareness on addiction and the movement towards identifying viable and effective nonpharmacological interventions for pain. We will discuss the philosophical context and practices of yoga in connection to these topics. \nWe hope that a greater understanding of addiction will increase compassion towards the people living in pain\, and decrease one of the most powerful stigmas around pain. \nLearning Objectives: \n\n Discover how yoga philosophy provides a framework for both understanding the root causes for pain and addiction.\n\n\n Explore the growing body of research supporting yoga and other mindfulness-based interventions as important complementary mind/body adjunctive approaches for the treatment of addiction.\n\n\n Explore a new integrative paradigm for addiction recovery that combines traditional yoga philosophy and practices (asana\, pranayama\, meditation) and western psychological treatments.\n\n\n Practice specific asana\, pranayama\, and meditation practices that can be utilized as part of an integrative approach to addiction recovery.\n\n  \nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 12 with Tracey Meyers (facilitated by Shelly Prosko\, Marlysa Sullivan and Neil Pearson) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series.
\nThis module includes a combination of lecture and experiential components\, including participation in awareness\, breathing\, meditation and movement practices. Resources will be shared that will be valuable for the therapist to use for themselves and to share with the people in pain they serve. \nThis module is being delivered online.  \nThere is a total of 12 hours live online and approximately 10 hours of videos and reading material included. \nLIVE ONLINE sessions will be over 3 days: \nSaturday June 26\, 2021: 9am – 1:30pm PST \nSunday June 27\, 2021: 9am – 1:30pm PST \nTuesday July 6\, 2021: 5pm – 8pm PST \nRegister at Ajna Yoga Therapy: CLICK HERE \n(photo credit above: Billy Pasco Unsplash)\n

SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 10: Ingredients for Pain Care – Nutrition and Yoga \nPresenter: Matt Erb \nFood can either enhance or detract from health. Food carries powerful ingredients and vast information from the environment to the body. In relation to pain we know that pain biology involves neurophysiological\, inflammatory\, immune\, and other interacting dynamics. Properties of food can be an important part of a larger recipe of ingredients that may carry direct impact on pain biology. While it is easy to say that good nutrition is an important facet to address for persons experiencing persistent pain or other health challenges\, we must bridge the gap between idealism and realism. \nThe concept of “food as medicine” must be mindful to not fall into preaching or privilege. Access to food and other systemic dynamics interact with each individual’s relationship with this topic. Yoga offers a framework for exploring each person’s unique makeup\, history\, and present relationship to food\, eating\, and nutrition. \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 10:\n\nFormulate and express an understanding of evidence-informed concepts in nutrition as relates to pain biology.\nExplain links between stress\, eating\, and mental\, emotional and behavioral health\nApply intra- and interpersonal values/ethics to enhance one’s understanding of and approach to taking committed action around one’s relationship with food and eating\nSummarize the potential benefits of applying principles of mindfulness to one’s relationship to food and eating\nExperience principles of mindful eating to self and be able to share these principles and experiments with others\n\nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 10 with Matt Erb (facilitated by Shelly Prosko\, Marlysa Sullivan and Neil Pearson) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 9: Body Awareness\, Bhavana and Pratyahara \nPresenter: Dr. Lori Rubenstein Fazzio \nBody awareness is a multidimensional mind-body construct that involves proprioception\, interoception and exteroception and is influenced by thought processes including beliefs\, memories\, attitudes\, affect\, past experience\, evaluation and attention.  Maladaptive body awareness is correlated with increased physical and emotional pain whereas cultivating non-judgmental\, non-evaluative body awareness is associated with reduced pain and suffering. \nThis webinar will explore both modern medical and yogic perspectives of how subtle body yoga practices can be used to cultivate adaptive body awareness and modulate pain (or modulate the pain experience). \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 9:\n\nExplain the difference between maladaptive body awareness and adaptive body awareness and how this relates to persistent pain.\nUnderstand how cultivating awareness of the subtle body through the senses can support people in pain.\nLearn how the practice of pratyahara as described in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras correlates with modern research and how this can support people in pain.\nBe able to guide clients through a novel visualization practice for cultivating awareness and supporting people in pain.\n\nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 9 with Dr. Lori Rubenstein Fazzio (facilitated by Shelly Prosko\, Marlysa Sullivan and Neil Pearson) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 7: Integrating Pain Science\, Education\, Movement and Yoga \nPresenter: Neil Pearson \nKnowledge can be acquired and beliefs influenced through lived experience\, through story\, and through more traditional methods of listening to a teacher or reading a book. \nResearch shows the benefits of helping people reconceptualize pain\, but as yet has not considered cognitive versus more embodied or experiential learning. Jnana yoga offers guidance in contemplative learning practices\, while science and yoga elude to the value of interoceptive education\, and more specifically to using interoceptive guidance to answer one of the least well-answered questions in pain care – “how much pain is okay when I move/exercise?” \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 7:\n\nList key misconceptions addressed in pain education.\nExplain the importance of experience when guiding individuals to new understanding of pain\, and new attitudes towards recovery.\nKnow how to guide people in pain to recover greater ease of movement through an interoceptive process.\n\nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 7 with Neil Pearson (facilitated by Marlysa Sullivan and Shelly Prosko) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 6: Polyvagal Theory and the Gunas: A Model for Autonomic Regulation in Pain \nPresenters: Marlysa Sullivan & Matt Erb \nThe autonomic nervous system is a vital component within the integrated systems-wide brain-body communication network. The ability to regulate the autonomic nervous system for relaxed and calm states of the body and mind as well as developing resilience for varying levels of activation is important for a biopsychosocial approach to pain care. The vagus nerve is an essential conduit for this information and provides both sensory/interoceptive information and a motor/parasympathetic response. \nPolyvagal Theory is a theory that explores how autonomic activation contributes to physiological and psychological states and behaviors. Yoga practices have been found to help cultivate regulation of the autonomic nervous system. In addition\, yoga philosophy has a complementary perspective of addressing underlying qualities\, or gunas\, to affect the body\, mind\, and behavior. These theoretical frameworks can be utilized to understand how the yoga perspective to pain care moves beyond a symptom-driven approach to facilitate whole person well-being. \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 6:\n\nDescribe autonomic regulation and resilience and the importance of these concepts in pain care.\n Explain the function of the vagus nerve for both interoceptive and parasympathetic function\nExamine polyvagal theory and neural platforms for regulation and resilience\nDescribe and differentiate the yoga framework of the gunas with polyvagal theory and its application to regulation and resilience within body-mind-environment interactions\nApply yoga practices to facilitate body-mind regulation and resilience utilizing the models of polyvagal theory and the gunas.\n\nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 6 with Marlysa Sullivan and Matt Erb (facilitated by Neil Pearson (and Shelly Prosko) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 5: Pain Biology and Sensitization \nPresenter: Neil Pearson \nOur understanding of pain biology continues to evolve\, opening the way for innovations in pain care\, exploration of the multiple mechanisms through which pain and ease of movement can be influenced\, and guiding clinicians to take a new look at interventions based on now-disproven theoretical premises. \nClarity and precision in our discussions of pain care are enhanced through understanding mechanisms\, classifications and terminology of pain. The lived experience of pain teaches us that “pain changes everything”\, and thus everything has the potential to change pain\, yet understanding cellular\, system and organism-based mechanisms of pain will enhance our ability to provide care that addresses the person in pain. \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 5:\n\nUnderstand key neuro-immune mechanisms of nociception\, and differentiate these from mechanisms of pain.\nExplain key changes in the peripheral\, central and autonomic nervous systems when pain persists.\nState six human behaviours through which nociception and pain can be positively influenced as part of pain care plans.\n\nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 5 with Neil Pearson (and Shelly and Marlysa facilitating) CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Book Club Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Chapter 4: Yoga and Yoga Therapy \nThe practices\, paths\, limbs and teaching of yoga provide a valuable framework from which pain\, suffering\, and pain care can be viewed. Equally important is the practical application of yoga techniques through each of the limbs and paths of yoga\, allowing individuals to explore and learn to influence the lived experience of persisting pain. \nThis webinar dives deeper into these aspects of yoga\, while providing those just beginning exploration to understand what is yoga\, what yoga teaches about pain and suffering\, how the eight limbs of Raja yoga relate to pain care\, and how the paths of yoga provide some insights to pain management beyond the usual biopsychosocial perspectives. \nWe will also cover the development of yoga therapy as an integrative healthcare profession. This work helps to provide the background of how we are discussing yoga and yoga therapy throughout the book for pain care. \nLearning Objectives for Chapter 4:\n\nDescribe foundational yoga philosophies including the eight limbs of Raja yoga\, four paths of yoga\, concepts of dharma\, right action\, and duhkha.\nDiscuss the many paths and practices that comprise yoga\, beyond postures and breathing.\nDescribe yoga therapy as an integrative healthcare practice.\nRecognize how the pancamaya kosha perspective can enhance both assessment and treatment planning for people in pain.\n\nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nTo register for just for Chapter 4 with Shelly\, Neil and Marlysa\, CLICK HERE \n\nThis webinar is part of a larger webinar series. SUMMARY:Insight into Compassion: The Foundation of Pain Care
DESCRIPTION:Join Shelly for this brief LIVE ONLINE presentation at The International Mental Health Festival. \nCompassion in pain care is more than just extending kindness towards people in pain. It involves gaining a more in-depth understanding and insight into the needs of the person we are serving and ourselves\, then choosing responses that serve both\, within the context of the situation. \nAs healthcare providers\, it is assumed we will provide compassionate care to those we serve\, as it is inherently part of our job. However\, research shows that the capacity for compassion can vary and depend on a wide variety of factors. There may be challenges we face that may influence or inhibit our ability to offer and receive compassion. \nJoin Shelly Prosko for this session as she outlines these challenges and the benefits of cultivating compassion and self-compassion in pain care for both the person living with pain and the health provider. \nFor more details about this free online conference and to register for this session\, CLICK HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Pain Society of Alberta Virtual Conference: Yoga Therapy: A Contribution to Comprehensive Pain Care
DESCRIPTION:Yoga Therapy: A Contribution to Comprehensive Pain Care \nShelly Prosko\, PT\, C-IAYT \nDescription: \nPeople in pain are seeking yoga as a complement to their pain care. A growing number of medical professionals are recommending yoga to their patients and an increasing number of clinicians are integrating yoga into their professional practice. Clinicians and people in pain are in need of accessible and cost-effective treatment options that encompass an evidence-informed\, biopsychosocial\, patient-centered and empowering approach to chronic pain care. \nYoga therapy is a health practice that offers such an approach and is being more widely accepted and used as a viable therapeutic option perhaps partly due to the increase in evidence supporting the positive effects of yoga on patient outcomes\, function and quality of life in many populations with persistent pain and pain associated conditions. \nThis presentation will highlight yoga therapy and its value in comprehensive pain management including how it can serve to potentially fill some of the gaps we currently face in pain care. The presentation will point to the research supporting yoga in pain care and offer clinical pearls that can be immediately integrated into practice. \nAfter this presentation\, you will: \n\nGain an introductory understanding of yoga therapy and how it is differentiated from modern postural yoga.\nLearn how yoga therapy can contribute to evidence-informed comprehensive pain management and fill a variety of gaps.\nDiscover where to learn more and gain insight on how to refer your patients to an appropriate\, safe and chronic pain-informed yoga practice.\nLearn an accessible and practical technique and guidelines that can be immediately integrated into the clinic setting.\n\n  \nTo sign up for Shelly’s session and the entire Pain Society of Alberta Online Conference FOR FREE\, CLICK HERE. \n
