DESCRIPTION:Photo credit Ron Naresh King \nIntegrating Research into Practice!  \nShelly is offering this 6-week yoga class series based on her collaboration in a recent research study! \n  \nFalls are the leading cause of injury-related death for older adults in North America\, and worldwide the loss and suffering caused by falls is extensive. \n  \nThose in their peri- and postmenopausal years are particularly at risk of falls and related injuries. Fortunately\, Yoga shows promise to improve a variety of fall risk factors—and to reduce injury when falls are unavoidable – particularly if the practices\, delivery\, guidance and cueing are suitable. \n  \nJoin Shelly Prosko\, physiotherapist and yoga therapist\, for this 6-week series as she guides you through the key yoga practices and principles used in the Balance Flow Yoga intervention that she co-developed for a recent study evaluating the effect of yoga on fall risk factors and injury risk. \nThis series is more than just about improving your balance! \nOther injury and fall risk factors include: pelvic floor function; upper body mobility\, strength and landing capacity; lower extremity strength; core strategy and timing\, including how we breathe; and balance confidence! \n  \n*This is a class setting where one-on-one balance assistance will not be provided. \nParticipants must be able to stand and walk independently and safely. \nOptions will always be offered such as use of chairs and walls for additional support and safety as indicated. \n  \n**This class is not meant to act as medical advice or treatment. DESCRIPTION:Chapter 15: Connection\, Meaningful Relationship and Purpose in Life – Social and Existential Concerns in Pain Care \nPresenter: Marlysa Sullivan \nSocial and spiritual aspects of pain care are often poorly understood in both their importance and application to client/patient care. Spiritual well-being includes themes of aligning with one’s core values\, meaning and purpose\, and connectedness extending from the personal\, to social relationships\, to something more abstract or transcendent. \nThe philosophy of eudaimonia provides a secular perspective on these themes of spiritual well-being. Eudaimonia looks at what it means to flourish\, to connect to one’s highest purpose and live a meaningful life. \nEudaimonic well-being has been used as a concept in research to discuss a steadfast contentment that comes from living in alignment with one’s values\, self-actualization\, authenticity\, and having a sense of purpose and meaning. Research supports the many benefits of spiritual and eudaimonic well-being for pain care. \nFoundational to yoga philosophy and practice are these themes of spiritual and eudaimonic well-being including that of connectedness to one’s essential nature\, to others\, aligning with one’s values\, and a concept of purpose that supports one’s flourishing in a way that supports those around them. \nThese concepts of connection\, meaning and purpose\, and values will be discussed through the perspectives of spiritual well-being\, eudaimonic well-being and yoga philosophy and practice. It involves the dynamic process of gaining a more in-depth understanding of the needs of the person in pain and ourselves; then choosing the best responses\, within the context of the situation. We lose so much when pain persists. Given the power of grief\, and that anything able to drive the hypervigilance of the individual and the nervous systems can maintain pain\, understanding grief and pain is vital. \nIn this webinar\, Antonio will discuss loss\, grief and pain\, their relationships and similarities and how they affect one another. Specific ideas and practices of yoga to work with loss\, grief and pain through this lens will be offered. \nWhat you will learn can be effectively applied via virtual and in-person consults. \nGiven that pain has a strong subjective component\, by learning new ways to connect with it\, and practicing new ways of addressing it\, an individual can become much more suited to manage it. It can be associated to tissue damage\, resulting in physical pain\, or derived from the damage caused to the connective psychic matrix that ensures the integrity of the self\, resulting in psychological pain. In any case\, the balance of physical or psychological health we are attached to for normal functioning is ruptured or lost. Then pain\, as a primary loss\, elicits the appearance of several secondary losses such as loss of functionality\, income\, status\, quality of life\, self-image\, body and psychological identity amongst others. Pain and grief are intimately related basic human experiences that enter into a particular feedback loop that perpetuates each other’s appearance. DESCRIPTION:An estimated 20-25% of North Americans and 1.5 billion people worldwide live with chronic pain and a growing number of health professionals are recommending yoga to their patients particularly since we now have research to support yoga is a potentially safe and effective approach for improving function\, pain and quality of life for people with chronic pain. \nYoga therapists are well positioned to contribute to a comprehensive pain care plan. However\, misunderstandings about pain by the therapist can result in suboptimal outcomes for the person in pain\, where the therapist might use language that unintentionally limits the potential for recovery and resilience or might avoid yoga practices that ultimately would improve tissue health\, reduce inflammation\, support self-efficacy\, help restore more ease of movement\, and help regain activities that the person enjoys and values in life. \nThis module includes a combination of lecture and experiential components\, including participation in awareness\, breathing\, meditation and movement practices. DESCRIPTION:Chapter 10: Ingredients for Pain Care – Nutrition and Yoga \nPresenter: Matt Erb \nFood can either enhance or detract from health. Food carries powerful ingredients and vast information from the environment to the body. In relation to pain we know that pain biology involves neurophysiological\, inflammatory\, immune\, and other interacting dynamics. Properties of food can be an important part of a larger recipe of ingredients that may carry direct impact on pain biology. While it is easy to say that good nutrition is an important facet to address for persons experiencing persistent pain or other health challenges\, we must bridge the gap between idealism and realism. \nThe concept of “food as medicine” must be mindful to not fall into preaching or privilege. Access to food and other systemic dynamics interact with each individual’s relationship with this topic. DESCRIPTION:Chapter 6: Polyvagal Theory and the Gunas: A Model for Autonomic Regulation in Pain \nPresenters: Marlysa Sullivan & Matt Erb \nThe autonomic nervous system is a vital component within the integrated systems-wide brain-body communication network. The ability to regulate the autonomic nervous system for relaxed and calm states of the body and mind as well as developing resilience for varying levels of activation is important for a biopsychosocial approach to pain care. The vagus nerve is an essential conduit for this information and provides both sensory/interoceptive information and a motor/parasympathetic response. \nPolyvagal Theory is a theory that explores how autonomic activation contributes to physiological and psychological states and behaviors. Yoga practices have been found to help cultivate regulation of the autonomic nervous system. In addition\, yoga philosophy has a complementary perspective of addressing underlying qualities\, or gunas\, to affect the body\, mind\, and behavior. The pelvic floor is also known to be intimately connected to the feet and the floor of the mouth. SUMMARY:Insight into Compassion: The Foundation of Pain Care
DESCRIPTION:Join Shelly for this brief LIVE ONLINE presentation at The International Mental Health Festival. \nCompassion in pain care is more than just extending kindness towards people in pain. It involves gaining a more in-depth understanding and insight into the needs of the person we are serving and ourselves\, then choosing responses that serve both\, within the context of the situation. \nAs healthcare providers\, it is assumed we will provide compassionate care to those we serve\, as it is inherently part of our job. However\, research shows that the capacity for compassion can vary and depend on a wide variety of factors.
