SUMMARY:Webinar: YogaUOnline: Pain Care Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Yoga\, Neuroplasticity and Pain: New Hope for Self-Empowerment and Healing \nPain is one of the most common reasons for individuals to seek assistance from medical\,\ntherapeutic and yoga practitioners. Yet\, few educational systems in western or eastern health care\ninclude knowledge acquisition related to pain or to the lived experience of pain.\nThe techniques\, discipline and systems of classic yoga are well-suited for integration with pain care and pain self-management techniques. A well-rounded yoga practice\, incorporating any lineage of yoga asana\, is one path that individuals can follow in their recovery from chronic pain conditions. \n  \nJoin Neil Pearson & Shelly Prosko in this 2 part webinar (two\, 1 hour webinars) hosted by Yoga U Online discussing pain science and offering an experiential component of using a variety of aspects of yoga for pain care\, and addressing topics such as practicing yoga in the face of pain (how much pain is too much in yoga?) \nPain is a complex and troublesome human experience that involves the body\, mind\, emotions and spirit. Pain strikes everyone from time to time\, but millions of people suffer with pain year in and year out.\n \nAccording to modern pain neuroscience\, however\, we may have greater influence over the experience of pain than previously thought. One of the best ways to safely and effectively manage the pain experience is to better understand its mechanism in the light of new insights into brain neuroplasticity.  \n \nJoin physical therapists and yoga therapists Neil Pearson and Shelly Prosko for a 3-part webinar (two live lectures and a yoga practice) on what modern neuroscience and yoga research teaches us about the ability to change pain\, even in people with complex pain conditions.  Yoga offers numerous techniques that are useful for managing pain\, and it can provide the lived experience that pain can be changed\, and that we can learn to move with ease in the face of pain.\n \nNeil and Shelly will discuss the physiology of pain from the perspective of new findings on neuroplasticity and pain\, and also will guide you in a series of yoga techniques that can be helpful to change the experience of pain. \n \nBecause each of us is very unique\, there is no specific protocol or yoga sequence for ‘yoga for pain’; but the concepts can be translated to any asana practice or individual. The techniques can be modified to suit the type of yoga class or the individual and are equally important for injury prevention as well as pain care.\n \nWhat you will learn:\n\nThe purpose of pain\, and the meaning of pain intensity\, quality and location.\nHow neurons respond to potentially and actually dangerous inputs.\nHow neurons in the body\, spinal cord and brain adapt in the face of persisting pain.\nHow functions of the nervous systems are influenced by all other body systems.\nWhy the pain experience is changeable and how.\nThe importance of starting with the basics of breath awareness and body awareness and the best techniques to use.\nTechniques for calming the nervous system and challenging your current response to pain.\nWhat pain science teaches us about injury prevention\, and how to move and perform asana safely when experiencing pain.\n\n\n\n\nThis Premium Course Also Includes These Bonuses!\n\nRecordings of Both Sessions: Yours to keep. It’s generally acknowledged that many people only retain 10-20 percent of what they learn in a workshop. You will get the recordings of both sessions (MP3 & MP4)\, enabling you to go back and listen to the workshop as many times as you like.\nTranscripts of Both Sessions: Ever wanted to refer to a certain part of a course? Even the best note takers miss a point every so often. With the transcripts of the sessions\, you can go back and refer to particularly important passages or clarify sections you were in doubt about.\n\nEach session is approximately one hour long and will be recorded. No matter where you are in the world — and even if you cannot tune in at the time of the actual broadcast — you can still benefit from taking the webinar at a time that works best to you. Listen to it as many times as you like!\n\n\n\n\nRegister at: YogaUOnline \n

Modern science and patient experience tells us we have much more ability to control pain than is generally accepted.” Neil Pearson \nNeil’s work focuses on providing the knowledge and tools needed for effective pain self-management\, through two avenues: Pain Care Education\, and Pain Care Yoga. \n  \nNeil works as a registered physiotherapist\, and a certified yoga therapist in Penticton\, BC\, Canada. He is an educator: Clinical Assistant Professor at University of British Columbia\, faculty with the BC Medical Association enhancing knowledge and clinical practice of primary care MDs\, and a faculty member in five yoga therapist training programs. Near home\, he is active in providing\, and researching the effectiveness of group pain education within both primary and secondary pain care. Neil is the founding Chair of the Pain Science Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association\, and the first PT recipient of the Canadian Pain Society’s top honour for Excellence in Interprofessional Pain Education. \nEducation\nNeil holds both a physical therapy degree and a degree in physical and health education from Queen’s University\, Kingston\, Canada. After 6 years of working in hospitals and private practice\, Neil returned to Queen’s to complete a research Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Science. In 1993\, Neil published his master’s research results in the prestigious medical journal\, SPINE (1995; Jun 1;20(11):1245-50). Neil is also a certified yoga therapist\, has published peer reviewed articles on yoga and pain\, and a chapter on this topic in Integrated Pain Management (in press). \nTeaching/International Workshop Experience\nNeil has worked as an instructor at Queen’s University and as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia – a position he maintains to this day. \nNeil’s passion for teaching and for pain science led him to develop courses to assist health care practitioners in providing treatment for people with persistent pain. Following the work of Lorimer Moseley and David Butler\, the first focus of these courses was to provide practitioners with a new model for understanding pain and people in pain. Neil’s well-received courses for health care professionals have expanded into one and two day workshops: Pain Science and Recovery\, and Advanced Pain Management\, which he presents internationally. \nNeil is an invited speaker for health care professionals\, for people in pain\, and for yoga teachers and therapists. The BC and Yukon Arthritis Societies work with Neil to offer his engaging scientific sessions\, Overcome Pain\, Live Well Again. Coming in 2014 is a resource to assist other health professionals in effectively delivering this education. \nIn 2008\, Neil\, along with four other equally committed Canadian physiotherapists (Diane Jacobs\, David Walton\, Debbie Patterson and Lesley Singer) set out to enhance the involvement of physiotherapists in the treatment of people in pain through the creation and delivery of an online course on pain science and pain management.Deemed a success\, the course attracted over 150 participants. Truly remarkable was the fact that it was able to reach remote locations where practitioners typically would not have access to such up-to-date and innovative information. \nPhysiotherapy and Pain Self-Management \nNeil’s physiotherapy practice is guided by almost thirty years as a physiotherapist\, over six years in a multidisciplinary pain management centre\, and by evidence based practice in the area of pain management. \nIn 2001\, after 15 years as a physiotherapist and educator\, Neil joined the Vancouver Pain Clinic. At this multidisciplinary clinic he gained considerable understanding of people in pain\, while increasing his knowledge and expertise in the area of pain science. It was there that Neil’s skills as a pain management educator truly excelled. \nIn 2007\, Neil moved to Penticton\, BC\, Canada and incorporated his business as Neil Pearson Physiotherapist Corporation. That year he began research into the effectiveness of large group pain management education. He also began the production of his pain management products including a patient education book\, an education DVD\, a Yoga DVD and audio CD’s all aimed at helping those with chronic pain live healthier lives. \nIn 2008\, Neil became the founding Chair of the Pain Science Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Presently\, he focuses his clinical work on one-on-one education\, treatment\, and therapeutic yoga. He collaborates with local doctors\, physiotherapists\, pilates instructors\, counsellors\, psychologists and yoga teachers. An inspiring speaker\, Neil continues to present his ideas on the international stage\, hoping to create a lasting change in the way people perceive pain and its role in the body. \n
