SUMMARY:Banff Pain Conference: Pain Society of Alberta
DESCRIPTION:Banff Pain Conference: Pain Society of Alberta \nJoin Shelly as she presents “Yoga as Therapy: Empowering Patients to Manage Persistent Pain & Live Well Again” at the Pain Society of Alberta’s 9th Annual Banff Pain Conference.  \nYoga is one of the leading Complementary and Alternative Medicine therapies in North America and its popularity continues to rise in our culture with over 20 million Americans practising it and over 44% of those not practising yoga\, state they are interested in trying it. There are even new fields of study\, Yoga Therapy and Medical Therapeutic Yoga\, that are being introduced to medical college programs across the continent as growing research suggests that yoga can be used as an effective form of adjunct therapy for a variety of dysfunctions and diseases\, including persistent pain. As health care practitioners who specialize or have an interest in treating the persistent pain population\, we naturally inquire about the safety\, efficacy and practicality of using yoga in the clinic setting. \nPersistent pain is so complex that even with our understanding of phenomena such as neuroplasticity\, the mind-body connection\, and the biopsychosocial nature of pain\, it is still poorly managed. Health care providers and sufferers of persistent pain continue to search for more effective methods of intervention that can reduce pain\, increase functional abilities and improve overall quality of life. \nIn this session\, Shelly will explain how and why yoga can be used to address different aspects of the pain experience safely\, effectively and in an evidence informed manner and how it can be a successful tool to promote self-efficacy and empower people to develop the skills required to actively manage their pain. \nBe prepared to participate and enjoy a mindfulness based breathing and focused awareness experience that you can immediately use with your patients in the clinic setting. \nLearning Objectives:                                                                           \n1. Describe yoga and learn what aspects of yoga can be used to effectively and safely treat the persistent pain population\, including a review of current research on yoga for pain. \n2. Learn the 5 components of the yoga kosha model of health that is used in assessing and treating people suffering from persistent pain and discuss the similarities to the biopsychosocial approach. \n3. Learn an alternative approach to goal setting that involves 3 steps to help patients experience success in their pain self-management strategies. \n4. Demonstrate at least 2 yoga techniques that can be used to help improve awareness\, calm the nervous systems and modulate the pain response. \n  \nLife is Now Pain Care Yoga states: “Pain is one of the most common reasons for individuals to seek assistance from medical\, therapeutic and yoga practitioners. Yet\, few educational systems in western or eastern health care include knowledge acquisition related to pain or to the lived experience of pain. The techniques\, discipline and systems of classic yoga are well-suited for integration with pain care and pain self-management techniques. A well-rounded yoga practice\, incorporating any lineage of yoga asana\, is one path that individuals can follow in their recovery from chronic pain conditions.” \nRegistration Details at: www.painsocietyofalberta.org

SUMMARY:Yoga U Online Webinar: Pain Care Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Yoga\, Neuroplasticity and Pain: New Hope for Self-Empowerment and Healing \nPain is one of the most common reasons for individuals to seek assistance from medical\,\ntherapeutic and yoga practitioners. Yet\, few educational systems in western or eastern health care\ninclude knowledge acquisition related to pain or to the lived experience of pain.\nThe techniques\, discipline and systems of classic yoga are well-suited for integration with pain care and pain self-management techniques. A well-rounded yoga practice\, incorporating any lineage of yoga asana\, is one path that individuals can follow in their recovery from chronic pain conditions. \nJoin Neil Pearson & Shelly Prosko in this 2 part webinar (two\, 1 hour webinars) hosted by Yoga U Online discussing pain science and offering an experiential component of using a variety of aspects of yoga for pain care\, and addressing topics such as practicing yoga in the face of pain (how much pain is too much in yoga?) \nPain is a complex and troublesome human experience that involves the body\, mind\, emotions and spirit. Pain strikes everyone from time to time\, but millions of people suffer with pain year in and year out.\n \nAccording to modern pain neuroscience\, however\, we may have greater influence over the experience of pain than previously thought. One of the best ways to safely and effectively manage the pain experience is to better understand its mechanism in the light of new insights into brain neuroplasticity.  \n \nJoin physical therapists and yoga therapists Neil Pearson and Shelly Prosko for a 3-part webinar (two live lectures and a yoga practice) on what modern neuroscience and yoga research teaches us about the ability to change pain\, even in people with complex pain conditions.  Yoga offers numerous techniques that are useful for managing pain\, and it can provide the lived experience that pain can be changed\, and that we can learn to move with ease in the face of pain.\n \nNeil and Shelly will discuss the physiology of pain from the perspective of new findings on neuroplasticity and pain\, and also will guide you in a series of yoga techniques that can be helpful to change the experience of pain. \n \nBecause each of us is very unique\, there is no specific protocol or yoga sequence for ‘yoga for pain’; but the concepts can be translated to any asana practice or individual. The techniques can be modified to suit the type of yoga class or the individual and are equally important for injury prevention as well as pain care.\n \nWhat you will learn:\n\nThe purpose of pain\, and the meaning of pain intensity\, quality and location.\nHow neurons respond to potentially and actually dangerous inputs.\nHow neurons in the body\, spinal cord and brain adapt in the face of persisting pain.\nHow functions of the nervous systems are influenced by all other body systems.\nWhy the pain experience is changeable and how.\nThe importance of starting with the basics of breath awareness and body awareness and the best techniques to use.\nTechniques for calming the nervous system and challenging your current response to pain.\nWhat pain science teaches us about injury prevention\, and how to move and perform asana safely when experiencing pain.\n\n\n\n\nThis Premium Course Also Includes These Bonuses!\n\nRecordings of Both Sessions: Yours to keep. It’s generally acknowledged that many people only retain 10-20 percent of what they learn in a workshop. You will get the recordings of both sessions (MP3 & MP4)\, enabling you to go back and listen to the workshop as many times as you like.\nTranscripts of Both Sessions: Ever wanted to refer to a certain part of a course? Even the best note takers miss a point every so often. With the transcripts of the sessions\, you can go back and refer to particularly important passages or clarify sections you were in doubt about.\n\nEach session is approximately one hour long and will be recorded. No matter where you are in the world — and even if you cannot tune in at the time of the actual broadcast — you can still benefit from taking the webinar at a time that works best to you. Listen to it as many times as you like!\n\n\n\n\nRegistration at Yoga U Online
