DESCRIPTION:Join Shelly Prosko\, physical therapist and yoga therapist\, as she returns to Juneau\, Alaska for this highly sought after PhysioYoga weekend where you will learn about the three diaphragms of your core system: respiratory\, pelvic and vocal; and experience how they all work together as a coordinated team to contribute to overall fitness\, performance\, health and wellness. \n  \nThe weekend consists of 3 sessions: \n3 hour session Friday evening \n6 hour session Saturday \n3 hour session Sunday \nChoose a combination or attend all 3 for the full experience and gain a more in-depth understanding of the 3 diaphragms as they relate to our health and wellness. \n  \n**12 hours CEU awarded to PTs and OTs for the full weekend. \n  \nSession 1: Friday March 29\, 2019: \nFind Breath\, Find Balance – 3 hours (5pm – 8pm)\n \nThis session is a combination of lecture and experiential. We will discuss respiratory mechanics and physiology and the most common inefficient breathing patterns in our culture and how they can lead to physical\, mental\, emotional and energetic imbalances and states of dis-ease in our bodies. We will experience yoga practices including mindful movement\, breathing\, visualization and mindfulness practices and understand the use of breath to change any aspect of our existence; and use any aspect of our existence to influence breath. \nObjectives: \n\nBriefly review the anatomy and extensive anatomical connections of the respiratory diaphragm.\nLearn about the biomechanics and physiology of breathing and how it influences the numerous systems in our body.\nDefine the components of a healthy and efficient breath pattern.\nDefine and explore inefficient breath patterns and the evidence based term: breathing pattern disorders (BPDs).\nDiscuss 3 most common inefficient breathing patterns\, and learn how and why they can contribute to physical\, mental\, energetic and emotional imbalance.\nLearn the factors that can contribute to inefficient breath patterns or BPDs using a biopsychosocial framework.\nLearn effective breathing methods that can potentially help optimize tissue oxygenation\, enhance organ system function\, improve energy\, vitality\, mental clarity\, focus\, postural control\, sleep patterns\, core strategies\, stimulate the relaxation response of the nervous system and optimize general overall health and wellness.\nParticipate in a valuable\, inspiring and empowering yoga practise that integrates these breathing methods with physical yoga postures\, movement\, meditation and yogic philosophy.\n\n**This workshop is not intended to assess or treat or act as medical advice for your individual health concerns. SUMMARY:San Diego Pain Summit - Compassion in Pain Care
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 San Diego Pain Summit (SDPS) continues to provide relevant clinical education and current pain research delivered by expert clinicians and research scientists surrounding the topic of pain.\nThe keynote for the 2019 SDPS is Dr. Antonio Damasio. \nShelly Prosko\, PT\, C-IAYT\, PYT\, CPI will be one of the speakers\, presenting on: \n\nA Case for Compassion in Pain Care: using an integrative yoga approach to enhance compassionate care to better serve the person in pain and the healthcare professional \nNumerous national health surveys and reports conclude that compassion is lacking in healthcare and many would even argue there is a growing compassion deficit in some parts of the world. As healthcare providers\, it is assumed we will provide compassionate care to those we serve\, as it is inherently part of our job. However\, research shows that the capacity to provide compassionate care can vary and depend on a wide variety of factors. There may be challenges we face that may influence and even inhibit our ability to offer compassion to people in pain. \nIn this session\, I will provide a working definition of compassion\, differentiate between empathy and compassion\, discuss the debate surrounding the ‘myth of compassion fatigue’\, summarize the research surrounding the benefits of providing and receiving compassion (including self-compassion) for those living with persistent pain and also for the healthcare providers\, and describe accessible and practical ways that yoga can be used to train and cultivate more compassionate (and self-compassionate) responses. The five tenets of Compassionate Pain Care (CPC) will be introduced. \n  \nFor list of all presenters\, topics\, full conference and pre-conference course details and to register\, visit https://www.sandiegopainsummit.com/

SUMMARY:Canadian Physiotherapy Congress - Montreal\, Canada
DESCRIPTION:Join Shelly Prosko\, Neil Pearson and Diana Perez at the Canadian Physiotherapy Congress where they will present a 75 minute session on Nov. 2\, 2018: \nYoga Therapy: An integrative biopsychosocial approach to enhance physiotherapy practice. \nYoga Therapy (YT) is an emerging integrative health practice that provides a framework for treating patients from a biopsychosocial (BPS) perspective. An ever growing body of research supports its effectiveness and clinical applicability for a variety of patients and conditions. Physical therapists can potentially improve patient outcomes of pain\, function and quality of life through gaining an enhanced understanding of yoga and therapeutic yoga techniques. This knowledge will also support appropriate and safe referrals from PT to community-based yoga programs. \nLearning Objectives: \nAt the end of this session\, attendees will be able to \n\nexplain evidence basis for yoga therapy\, and describe key examples of how yoga therapy is integrated into clinical PT practice.\nevaluate the effective integration of yoga practices and theory within the biomechanical and biopsychosocial paradigms of PT practices.\ndescribe how a therapeutic yoga framework of assessment and treatment can be integrated into physiotherapy practice.\n\nThis 75 minute presentation will explain yoga therapy (YT) and outline its scientifically supported therapeutic effects. Examples will be presented on how YT is used in clinical PT practice as a BPS assessment and treatment approach. Specific focus will be given to YT techniques appropriate for MSK\, persistent pain conditions and pelvic floor health. \nThis session includes both experiential learning of yoga techniques and interactive lecture. Clinical scenarios will be discussed\, demonstrating the positive effects of integrating yoga techniques with PT clinical practice. All physiotherapists\, physiotherapist assistants (PTAs) and  physical rehabilitation therapists (PRTs) will benefit knowing of this growing therapeutic field and how to integrate some of its principles and practices into their work. Those who discharge patients to community movement programs require understanding of the therapeutic aspects and potential hazards of yoga practices. \n  \nFurther details and registration for the entire Congress Nov.1-3\, visit: https://www.montreal18.ca/home/ \n  \n
