Yoga Therapy: An integrative biopsychosocial approach to physiotherapy practice for persistent pain management, MSK and pelvic floor rehabilitation and wellness care.

Shelly’s Afternoon Session Description:

Accessible Yoga Practices as an Adjunct to Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation and Wellness Care.

Participants will experience a variety of accessible yoga practices that can be immediately integrated into physiotherapy sessions as an adjunct to enhance pelvic floor rehab and wellness care for those patients suffering from a variety of pelvic floor dysfunctions or other musculoskeletal conditions where the pelvic floor is commonly involved.  These non-internal techniques are appropriate for any physiotherapist to use with patients and will include: pelvic floor awareness and visualization practices, mindfulness practices, and breathing practices in a variety of yoga postures to help promote pelvic floor relaxation and pelvic diaphragm excursion. Yoga postures and mindful movement coordinated with varying breath cycles to help facilitate pelvic floor musculature engagement and excursion will also be included. Examples of different verbal instructions and cueing will be demonstrated.

Shelly’s Afternoon Session learning objectives

  • Gain a general understanding of how yoga methods and philosophy can be used as an adjunct to support optimal pelvic floor health for people who may be suffering from a variety of pelvic floor (PF) dysfunctions.
  • Learn non-internal techniques to support and enhance PF relaxation (including yoga postures, visualization, breathing practices, PF awareness practices, mindful movement practices, and mindfulness meditation techniques)
  • Learn non-internal practices with examples of cueing that can facilitate PF engagement in coordination with various breathing sequences, visualization, awareness practices, yoga postures and sequencing, and a variety of selected mindful movements.

Diana’s Afternoon Session Description

Yoga principles and techniques to enhance MSK rehabilitation.

Participants will receive instruction in how to use YT in the rehabilitation of MSK conditions. Specific examples on the use of pranayama (breath), postural alignment, asana (postures) and relaxation and mindfulness techniques will be reviewed. Precautions and contraindications will also be discussed.

Diana’s Afternoon Session learning objectives

  1. Know and understand some fundamental YT techniques for MSK rehabilitation.
  2. Understand the importance of breath as part of the asana practice.
  3. Know the precautions and contraindications of asana and pranayama techniques.

Neil Pearson leading Pain

Neil’s Afternoon Session Description

Yoga principles and techniques to enhance PT pain management.

Participants will receive instruction in awareness and regulation techniques, while learning the scientific foundation for their effectiveness. Each technique will be practiced in a comfortable position and during a challenging movement, to demonstrate the importance of practice and skill mastery when using these techniques clinically. Principles of yoga will provide an additional perspective on pain and on people in pain, while providing guidance on using these to enhance the outcomes of any therapeutic movement process.

Neil’s Afternoon Session learning objectives

  1. Discuss pain and persisting pain from yogic perspectives.
  2. Demonstrate foundational skill in breathing, body awareness and self-regulation techniques applicable to improve functional outcomes.

Integrate yoga techniques and principles into current clinical practice.

Please note that each of the three afternoon breakout Sessions will be limited to a maximum of 30 Registrants each (for a total of 90 Registrants).
